Different from the March 29 webinar, this upcoming presentation is geared towards frontline staff, their managers, hospital leadership, risk managers, and providers. Please share this with your colleagues as appropriate.
Front line staff are continuously working in a patient’s medical record. Their documentation can completely change the outcome of a lawsuit and make or break a case. If you or your organization are involved in a lawsuit, you will have to defend their decisions and documentation (or lack thereof). Complete records will defend you against allegations of negligence, improper treatment, or omissions of care. On the other hand, medical malpractice lawsuits are very difficult to defend when poor documentation practices are identified throughout the record. We will discuss how insufficient documentation from staff is a major issue noted in malpractice claims and a top driver in indemnity payments.
Learning Objectives
- Identify and discuss key essentials of documentation in the medical record to successfully defend professional practice during legal proceedings (deposition/trial)
- Discuss frequent documentation and testimony challenges encountered during legal proceedings (deposition/trial)
- Identify at least 3 clinical situations that require narrative documentation
- Incorporate at least one “lesson learned” into everyday practice
